By Car: The Classic Road Trip
For those who enjoy the journey as much as the destination, the road trip from Fort Lauderdale to Key West is an experience you won’t want to miss. Known as one of the most beautiful drives in the world, the Overseas Highway stretches over 100 miles across the Florida Keys, giving travelers endless views of turquoise waters and island landscapes. Covering approximately 190 miles in total, this journey can take around six hours from Fort Lauderdale — longer if you stop to soak up the sights, and shorter if you’re coming from Miami (about 4 hours).
As you leave Fort Lauderdale, take I-595 to the Florida Turnpike for the fastest route south. The Turnpike merges onto US 1 in Florida City, marking the start of your journey into the Keys. You can also take US 1 directly from Fort Lauderdale, but it will add significant travel time due to traffic and lower speed limits.
As you continue, the journey reaches a stunning climax at the Seven Mile Bridge, one of the longest bridges in the world, where you’ll feel as if you’re gliding across endless ocean views. The Keys portion of US 1 is heavily monitored, so stay within the speed limits to enjoy the drive safely and avoid speed traps. You’ll hear a lot of people talk about Mile Markers, which are small green signs along US 1 that tell the distance from the start of the highway in Key West to the northern end of the Keys in Key Largo.
If you’re renting a car, be sure to check with your rental company about a SunPass to handle Florida’s tolls. Consider choosing a convertible to take full advantage of the warm ocean breeze and sunshine, making the journey feel even more like a true island adventure.
If you can, try to travel in and out of the Keys during the week. It’s always extra busy heading south on Friday and Saturday, and heading north on Sunday. You also want to try to avoid rush hour in Miami. Travel during the dry season (December to April) to avoid hurricane season and enjoy the best weather.
